Lend a Helping Hand

This past weekend I had the opportunity to travel to the Missouri Angus Futurity in Columbia, MO. I have been in attendance at this event for the past 7 years and is always something I look forward to. The cattle were of high caliber and it is always great to reminisce with old friends. My roommate, an old friend from high school, my brother, and myself headed to Columbia on Friday after class. My roommate and my buddy from high school were headed to Columbia to participate in an artificial insemination course that was offered by Genex.

The purpose for my brother and I going to Columbia this weekend was to lend a hand to some good friends. Towards the end of January some of our Angus friends had an unfortunate and completely unexplainable encounter. Those of you involved with the breed know exactly what I am speaking of. Typically we go to sales on the weekend to work, but that is what helps us get through college. This weekend was different, this was about helping out our friends and neighbors that we love. If something this tragic happened to me, I know that there are many friends out there that would do the same for us. They were not able to take the cattle to the show due to chores at home, so another good friend lent a hand to take them to Columbia and tend to them for the weekend. My brother and I only went up on Friday to assist in fitting the cattle on Saturday.

This was a weekend to remember. The cattle showed well, with 3 out of 4 of them winning their division, as well as the reserve champion bull. Sunday was the sale, and they all sold extremely well! This story just reminds me of why it is important to lend a hand to a friend in need, because you know they would do the same for you!


Slick your Coat

I assume it is still considered winter, but the weather pattern certainly has not indicated so! It feels like late spring, with temperatures in the upper 60’s and occasional 70’s, show cattle are beginning to need sheared to begin regrowth for the summer show season. I was able to go home this weekend for the first time in over a month and had the chance to look at my calves as well as shear out the show heifers. Shearing the show calves is always something that you hate to do, because their hair currently is beautiful, but when it starts to shed in a couple weeks it won’t look too hot! Shearing show heifers reminds me of the cycle of life. It is similar to turning over a new leaf for an individual. After shearing my heifers at home this weekend I came back to the school farm and sheared out the Herefords here, after they had been slicked I noticed that they ran around the pastures wondering what had just happened to them. It is similar to that feeling you get on a cool day shortly after walking out of the barbershop! The shearing represents rejuvenation and replenishing to me. They shed their old ways and look to a brighter future. Similar to what college students as well as people already in the career field do every day. In college you are constantly trying to get to the next level, and once you reach that level you shed off and start over again, but you have more knowledge under your belt. In the career field it may mean new clients, a new boss, or a territory change. These heifers have no control over getting sheared, just as you may have no control over your career, but if you have a positive outlook on your regrowth, the potential success is there!

Dinner is on the Table!

Tonight as I lit the grill, it excited me to know that my roommates and I have the ability to cook a high quality meal. I don’t usually buy high end steaks (college kid), but I can grill an average quality steak to perfection. Grilling is something I love to do and usually grill out about 3 times a week. My cut of the semester is a flat iron steak, the flat iron is also known as the top blade steak (comes from the top of the shoulder blade) and was developed at the University of Nebraska. For not being a loin cut it is extremely juicy and has excellent flavor and hardly any waste in fat. Even though we all know fat provides flavor, this steak is excellent. The key to grilling any steak is not over cooking it. I love a rare steak, but some people do not. Even if you do not like it rare, cook it medium! I know you will like it, and be prone to eat steak more often. If you can learn to cook it right at home, eating out will come less often. I would much rather eat a steak that I have prepared, than someone at a restaurant. Not to mention the cost. Cooking a store bought cut or a home raised cut is much cheaper than eating a steak out that someone may not have cooked to your liking.
